I'm sure Ave Maria Singles won't post this testimonial on its web site, so I'll have to post it on my own site instead.
This web site seems Catholic on one level but when one scratches the surface some really bad stuff appears.
First, one is required to give eye color and hair color in order to complete any part of the "Basics" section. This is absolutely unacceptable on a Catholic web site. Because I believe that at some point a Catholic has to be Catholic no matter what, I refused to complete that information. As a result, I'm almost invisible unless someone searches for every member, say, in New York. Many members have me blocked, as the site says, "because I do not agree with the Church on abortion," so I can't even write to them, even though no one is more unalterably opposed to abortion than I am. I offered the proprietor of the site $500 to fix this but he declined my offer on specious grounds. It's all up to Anthony Buono and he won't bend.
Height, eye, and hair color are all ACCIDENTS OF NATURE. They are not Catholic values! They shouldn't even be listed on a Catholic web site, much less required information.
Second, people with no annulments or annulments "in process" are allowed to post profiles. On a Catholic web site, this is absolutely unacceptable as well. Either a person is married-- or he isn't. A person who does not posess a declaration of nullity and who was otherwise properly married is, well, MARRIED! Such a person commits grave sin if he starts dating.
If you agree with me on this, why not drop a note to Mr. Buono? The address seems to be service@AveMariaSingles.com. Write even if you're not single; the term "Catholic" belongs to all of us in the Catholic Church, and we all have "standing" to protest this sort of thing when it takes place under the banner of "Catholic."
And Emily from Hartford, CT, if you're out there, I really wanted to write to you, but you had me blocked (innocently, but blocked nonetheless), and I can't compromise my principles.
Blessed Mother, please open Mr. Buono's heart to understand why he should consider my request seriously. Help him to see the pain that your son must endure in his attempt to marry one of your faithful daughters and give him the compassion to want to end this unnecessary and unwarranted suffering that he has the power to end almost by an act of his will. Help us all to be one in Christ our Lord. Amen.
